Trainer Brian Lynch suspects Classic Causeway might have displaced his palate in his last race, perhaps accounting for the colt’s poor performance, so the trainer is tweaking a couple of things. Up next, Classic Causeway Kentucky Derby betting odds.
“We’ve always kept things very, very simple. With him by running him in a snaffle [bridle],” said Lynch, who on Saturday will saddle Classic Causeway for owner-breeders Clarke Cooper and Patrick O’Keefe in the 148th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
“But I felt like he may have displaced in the Florida Derby,” describing a common condition wherein a horse’s soft palate will drift upward to sit atop the epiglottis to partially obstruct the trachea and restrict air flow. “When he was scoped after the race, he was displacing repeatedly but correcting himself. Maybe in the race he did get entrapped for a little bit, we don’t know.”
Current Classic Causeway Kentucky Derby Betting Odds
For the Kentucky Derby, Classic Causeway will be equipped with a dropped noseband bridle. Which sits lower on the nose and encircles the chin groove in front of the bit. The noseband can help to keep a horse from opening its mouth and crossing its jaw by increasing pressure lower on the nose. This is combined with a tongue tie, which Classic Causeway also will have for the first time for a race. A tongue tie keeps a horse from moving its tongue excessively; some trainers believe it helps prevent a horse from flipping its palate. Furthermore, he will be free.
Lynch admitted to being down and puzzled following the Florida Derby. However, early Monday he was back to his cheerful self.
“The horse is doing good,” he beamed. “Five days out and doing good.”
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is hoping that White Abarrio will be the first horse to cross the finish line at this year’s Kentucky Derby.
White Abarrio has won 4 of 5 starts, including the Holy Bull and the Florida Derby nearly two months apart. The only blemish on his record came Nov. 27 at Churchill Downs, where he lost to Smile Happy in the Kentucky Jockey Club. The Race Day colt got caught inside and had to switch out on the way to finishing third.
“He stayed in his home facility where he was most comfortable,” Joseph said. “Ordinarily when we ship horses, we’ve had good success when we’ve shipped as late as possible. With the Derby, we’re trying to keep the same routine that’s been successful for us.”
Updated Odds for White Abarrio Kentucky Derby Favorite
“After the trip we got at Churchill, we all talked it over,” Joseph said, referring to a conversation with Cornett and his partner Antonio Pagnano. “We said we don’t want to have those ‘excuses’ trips. We want to know if he’s legit or not.”
Joseph took part in the September 2020 running of the Derby with Ny Traffic, who started strong before fading to finish eighth. While that experience might have provided added savvy to prepare White Abarrio for this weekend, there is only so much Joseph can apply from 20 months ago.
“Each horse is different,” he said. “He arrived today. You hope he has a good week. It’s another race, but it’s a big one. As far as training-wise, no, you don’t really do much different.”
Santa Anita Derby winner Taiba will have just one workout in preparation for the Kentucky Derby according to trainer Tim Yakteen, who spoke to reporters a few hours after he had worked his other potential Derby starter, Santa Anita Derby runner-up Messier.
Taiba made his second start at the Santa Anita Derby. After the race, Yakteen said Taiba “took the race well. But it was a hard race. Also I want to make sure he’s energetic.”
“He doesn’t need much to be fit,” Yakteen said. “I want to go in on the fresher side. He’ll work Thursday or Friday this coming week. I’ll give him a few stronger gallops.”
Taiba’s only start before the Santa Anita Derby was a maiden sprint five weeks earlier. Remember that? Fitness was certainly not an issue in the April 9 Santa Anita Derby, as he beat Messier on the square while stretching out to 1 1/8 miles.
Taiba Kentucky Derby Betting Pick
If he wins the Kentucky Derby, Taiba will become the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby. This in only his third start since Leonatus did it in 1883. He will also become the first horse to win the Derby in his third start without having raced as a 2-year-old.
Messier, who worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on Saturday at Santa Anita, is also scheduled to work Thursday or Friday. Yakteen said. Both colts are scheduled to fly from California to Kentucky on May 1. Neither is scheduled to work at Churchill Downs.
Both Taiba and Messier had been trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. This prior to Baffert having to serve a 90-day suspension owing to a medication violation for Medina Spirit in last year’s Derby. With that said, Taiba is ready. Taiba is our Kentucky Derby pick.
On Monday, Classic Causeway’s trainer Brian Lynch announced that the three-year-old will be participating in the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
Even though Classic Causeway had earned more than enough qualifying points for the May 7 Kentucky Derby by winning the Sam F. Davis and Tampa Bay Derby, he was removed from consideration after finishing 11th at the Florida Derby, which was his last race.
However, Lynch said recent discussions with the colt’s owners. Clarke M. Cooper and Patrick O’Keefe, resulted in the decision to go forth with a Derby run. What does this mean for Saturday?
“I’ve been through every excuse not to run him. I can’t find one,” said Lynch. “The two owners have a combined age of 160 years of living amongst everyone who’s ever run in the Derby,” he added, referring to Cooper and O’Keefe.
Classic Causeway Kentucky Derby 2022 Betting Lines
“The colt has just given me no excuses. He’s sound and he worked great Saturday,” when breezing five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Churchill Downs. “I’ve just got to put a line through the Florida Derby and trek on.”
Classic Causeway had been ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. in his last three races. However, since the jockey will be riding Mo Donegal in the Derby, Julien Leparoux will have the Derby mount.
With Classic Causeway back in the Derby. There will be a domino effect as to who’s in and who’s out in the Derby. Entries will be drawn Monday, May 2. As many as four horses can be listed on the Derby program as also-eligibles in case of scratches before the morning of Friday, May 6. Stay tuned for the latest updates!
In Due Time finished third as the favorite Saturday in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and remains a prospect for the Kentucky Derby. Next, our In Due Time Kentucky Derby pick. Although trainer Kelly Breen said Monday he and the owners of the Not This Time colt need more time to determine whether they actually want to run in the May 7 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Tawny Port won the Lexington. This by a length over Major General. With In Due Time and jockey Paco Lopez another length back in third as the 19-10 choice. Breen said Lopez believes In Due Time “didn’t handle the surface all that well” and that the May 21 Preakness Stakes would be the goal if they decide to forgo the Kentucky Derby.
In Due Time is among a number of bubble horses whose Derby status will need to be determined by entry day, May 2. Right around the corner.
Tawny Port was assigned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure for the Lexington on dirt. The Peachtree Stable colt had raced primarily on Tapeta beforehand. Trainer Brad Cox now has three confirmed Derby starters in his Churchill Downs barn. With the others being Arkansas Derby winner Cyberknife and Louisiana Derby runner-up Zozos.
Odds for In Due Time Kentucky Derby Pick
On Sunday, Epicenter had his second work since he won the March 26 Louisiana Derby, going five furlongs in 1:00.80 in company with 6-year-old Gun It. He is considered the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in many early rankings.
“With Epicenter, the spacing of his races since December has been very effective for him,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. Do you agree? Post your comments below. “We’re just trying to put the building blocks. Space for him to handle the mile and a quarter in the Derby here. I couldn’t feel any better with how he’s doing here and how he loves Churchill Downs.”
Tawny Port is no longer on the bubble after winning the Lexington Stakes, which was the final points qualifier for the May 7 Kentucky Derby.
Tawny Port, owned by the Peachtree Stable of John Fort, earned $229,000 of the $400,000 purse with his one-length triumph in the Grade 3 Lexington, but, more importantly, the son of the late Pioneer of the Nile showed he could handle a dirt surface. The colt previously had raced just once on dirt when finishing fifth in the Feb. 19 Risen Star at Fair Grounds.
“There was a little bit of a question mark with how well he would handle the dirt,” trainer Brad Cox said. “But he was pretty powerful today.”
Six of the starters in the Lexington, which offered points on a 20-8-4-2 basis toward the 148th Kentucky Derby, entered the race with at least 10 points, led by Tawny Port, who just two Saturdays ago earned 40 points by finishing second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park. He now has 60. Major General now has 18; In Due Time has 24; and Ethereal Road has 22.
Tawny Port Kentucky Derby Odds 2022
Ridden by Florent Geroux, Tawny Port rallied from eighth in a field of 11 3-year-olds when finishing 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.24 over a fast track. He paid $12.20 as second choice. Tawny Port was given an 89 Beyer Speed Figure.
“He ran well at the Fair Grounds,” Cox said. “Florent came back and had positive comments after that race, and I thought, ‘Well, you know, right now, maybe you try to go in the Jeff Ruby Steaks.’ So that’s what we did, and he ran a real respectable race. Then we found ourselves nominated to this race and it worked out today. This was actually John’s idea to run in this race.”
Slow Down Andy has been withdrawn from consideration for the Kentucky Derby after a recent spike in temperature at Keeneland, trainer Doug O’Neill confirmed Saturday morning.
The three-year-old had made the 20-horse cutoff for the May 7 Kentucky Derby. This by winning the March 27 Sunland Derby. However, the Nyquist colt missed a scheduled workout here this weekend after taking ill.
Slow Down Andy is owned by Reddam Racing. Also, has been ridden in every race by Mario Gutierrez in compiling a 3-for-5 record that also includes a victory in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity in December. Reddam, O’Neill. Also, Gutierrez have teamed to win two prior runnings of the Kentucky Derby. This in 2012 with I’ll Have Another and in 2016 with Nyquist. Nyquist a legend? We believe so.
Update on Slow Down Andy
The withdrawal of Slow Down Andy from the Derby top 20 assures a spot for Charge It and Tawny Port (40 points each) in the Churchill Downs starting gate. Tawny Port won the Lexington Stakes this weekend. Earning enough points to run at the Derby. In Due Time finished third at Lexington. However, his status for the Derby is uncertain because trainer Kelly Breen didn’t feel he handled the Lexington surface well.
Bye Bye Bobby, who earned 20 points when second to Slow Down Andy in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park. Also was withdrawn earlier this week from the Kentucky Derby by trainer Todd Fincher because of a foot abscess that developed following his arrival here at Keeneland. Looking for updated Derby odds? It has recently been confirmed that Un Ojo will be running at the 148th Kentucky Derby. Below, updated Un Ojo Kentucky Derby 2022 odds.
Un Ojo, the one-eyed winner of the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel at Oaklawn, is set to participate in this year’s Kentucky Derby. This after a Saturday morning work that satisfied his trainer, Ricky Courville.
According to Courville, Un Ojo worked five furlongs in 1:03.15 on a fast track. The 50 points the horse earned for winning the Rebel Stakes. Earned him a spot in the Derby, but an injury he sustained after getting bounced off the wall twice in April’s Arkansas Derby put his status for the Kentucky Derby in doubt.
Current Un Ojo Kentucky Derby 2022 Odds Lines
With that being said, he finished eighth in that race. Also, the incident led to staples being placed in a shoulder that sustained a “little, superficial cut,” Courville said. Really? The staples, which can promote quicker healing, were removed last week. Also, Courville said he wanted to assess the horse in a work before shipping to Churchill Downs.
Furthermore, Courville said he plans to ship Un Ojo to Churchill Downs on Tuesday. What does this mean for the remaining odds? He also added that Don’t Wait Up, who runs Saturday night in the $60,000 Lafayette at Evangeline Downs, could join Un Ojo. Talk about underdogs. Don’t Wait Up could target the Pat Day Mile at Churchill with a strong race Saturday, Courville said.
In conclusion, Ramon Vazquez, who has been riding Un Ojo at Oaklawn will have the mount at the Kentucky Derby.
In less than a month we get ready to bet on Kentucky Derby 2022. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will be absent from the Kentucky Derby this season due to a suspension following the disqualification of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit for a failed drug test. When is the Kentucky Derby? The 148th Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 7th, 2022.
With Baffert out, owners of Kentucky Derby prospects training under him will have to take their horses to other trainers. If they hope to win the Derby this year. However, none of the owners have given any indication on when or where their horses will be transferred. Who will be the favorite? This month we will find out.
Tom Ryan of SF Racing, the lead owner for most of Baffert’s Derby prospects, requested all questions be sent via email. After receiving the queries Ryan declined to comment. He instead referred to social media for any additional insight.
Madaket Stable’s Sol Kumin would not comment on any future plans with regard to Baffert. He only noted both Newgrange and Pinehurst were running Saturday in seven-figure races, “and we will try and focus on those for now and try and enjoy them.”
Guide to Bet on Kentucky Derby 2022 Online
Since his suspension was announced, owners of horses trained by Baffert said any potential transfer to another trainer probably would not come until before the final round of Derby preps, which are virtual automatic qualifiers for the top two finishers. Those races begin March 26 with the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan and the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds. In each prep, 100-40-20-10 points are awarded to the top four finishers, if eligible. There are six other races of the same value April 2 and 9.
Horses trained by Baffert are banned by Churchill Downs from qualifying for or competing in the next two editions of the Kentucky Derby. Even though the verdict will be appealed, Baffert Baffert’s horses are still ineligible to compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby. What will this mean?

Without further ado, more picks. Holy Bull Stakes winner White Abarrio, one of the horses expected to qualify for the Derby, has looked very impressive in training and is expected to be one of the favorites in the April 2 $1 million Curlin Florida Derby, after breezing five furlongs at Gulfstream Park March 13 in the fastest clocking recorded at the distance. Secondly, White Abarrio will compete.
“He galloped out in 1:12. It was a good solid work,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “He’ll probably come back next week at five-eighths in company.”
Odds and Update for White Abarrio Kentucky Derby 2022 Bets Pick
“No second thoughts about (skipping the Fountain of Youth) at all. Going into the Holy Bull he had missed a couple of works, so he kind of ran as a fresh horse, which can take a toll on them,” Joseph said. “Since the Holy Bull, he’s shown everything you would want a horse to show. He’s going in the right direction—how you would want a 3-year-old to go this time of year.”
Furthermore, White Abarrio made his debut with an impressive 6 3/4-length victory at Gulfstream Sept. 24 before being purchased privately by his current connections, for whom he scored a four-length optional claiming allowance victory Oct. 29. He finished his juvenile campaign with a third-place finish in the Nov. 27 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs.
