Horse Racing Betting Structure at a Glance

With just a few days before the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby we take a break today to look at the state of today’s horse racing betting structure and the subtle nuances involved when wagering on the Kentucky Derby.

There are various reasons people why many people watch horse races. It may be the betting side, it may be a “good fun” side when going out with friends, or just because you enjoy doing it or simply because you like it. There may be any other reason and actually, any reason to watch horse races is a good one. However, you should know the structure of the race.

Horse Racing Betting Derby 2017

Horse races are classified into four different groups: maiden races, claiming races, allowance races, and stakes races. A maiden race is a very fun type of race that features horses that had never won a race before. It is usually a great race to place your bets on because the stakes are high and you never know which horse will win it. Any horse is a maiden before it wins its first race. So basically, if a horse wins a maiden race, it will never participate in one ever again, because the horse had lost its maiden status.

Claiming races are races where anyone with the cash can get himself/herself a horse. An interested person gets a horse before the race and after the race, the old owner gets the prize and the person remains with the horse. This is a very simple process but it can get really fun, this is one of the biggest and fastest rising categories in the horse racing at the moment. When it comes to Kentucky Derby online betting, specifically claiming races, this has grown into one of the most popular forms of wagering on the Kentucky Derby in past years and will most likely repeat again this year.

In 2017 allowance races are races where the horses that can participate are the ones that had never won a maiden race, claiming or starter race ever. It is a big stake race and generally, there are nonwinning horses participating and being wagered on.

Stakes races are the top game, the biggest there is in the culture of horse racing. All kinds of people attend these races, from big betters, high stake rollers, people that watch horse races “professionally “ to those that just come casually to one or two horse races. Some of the most popular races in this class are Kentucky Derby, Breeders Cup, and Belmont stakes. These are the types of races only the best horses run, and that’s why it gets the most attention. As the name says, the stakes are very high and they have highest bets (higher you can possibly imagine). There are three different classes of horses participating, enumerated G1, G2 and G3, which rolls down from G1 as the best class. There is a huge difference between the class G1 and G3.

Horse Racing History

There are probably some people that may think; the Kentucky Derby is really one amazing event, but how did everything start? When was the first horse race held, what did it look like, and was there betting available for it? Well, for the fact, horse racing was recorded firstly in Assyria around 1500 B.C. Later on, a bit modern events were held in Rome that is known as Chariot Racing. The first actual race, held for the reasons of testing the horse’s reliability and speed and for the sake of entertaining visitors was held in an event in London, more precisely in Smithfield, somewhere around 1174.

It has deep roots in the English culture and it is well-known that the Royal Family had been doing horse breeding since Henry II. Later in 1752 the first horse – the Jockey Club was formed and soon after that, the races began. First Derby race was held in 1780 in Epsom, but that wasn’t even close to what we have today. One hundred years later, around 1850, the first major horse events were held and that is when the horse derby races were turned into a sort of tradition. Of course, the idea was to see which one of two horses can cross the finish line faster so they can see which horse is more valuable than the other and which one is worth investing in.

Horse Racing History

In the British/Irish culture, there are three types of horse races: national hunt, flat and all weather.

Flat races usually start in March and it is the race where horses run a predetermined distance. The races may vary in quality and it depends on how old and what class are the horses that participate in the flat race. The all-weather race is very similar to flat race but the difference is that the terrain is not natural, it is pre-made and it can be used at any time of the year, that’s why it got the name all weather. It is usually used for night time horse races and it tests the horse’s ability to adapt to different terrains. The last type of race is the national hunt, which is a race on long tracks where betting takes place. There are other classifications of national hunt races such as bumpers (races with no obstacles), chases (where competitors clear fences) and hurdles (as the name says, a race where participants jump hurdles). The difference between chases and hurdles is that chases can contain some obstacles such as water lakes, natural ditches, whilst a hurdle race will contain only hurdles.

Graham Motion Focus

This year’s biggest focus will be on one of the most successful horse trainers on the continent. His name is Graham Motion, and the focus is not because of his success, but because of his horse, which did really badly in the race finishing in the seventh place. He says that a possible reason for this low ranking of his three-year-old colt is probably tiredness because of the hard training, but that is not an excuse. The team needs to perform strong and train hard in the following days to be able to compete with other newcomer horse trainers and their horses because these are the types of races that anyone can win. The horse will need some adaptation, and he doesn’t want to say anything else, he believes they are a good tandem capable of winning the derby. There are teams that have become really competitive in the past, for example, Classic empire that won the Breeders Cup Juvenile and then Holy Bull Stakes that trains much more than some think was necessary…

The second most attractive event on the derby will be this race, that includes a trainer that had almost won San Felipe Stakes a one time. Why almost, you may wonder? The situation is even worse than you think, the horse pulled up with a fractured left front leg… After the proper treatment, we expect it to return and surprise all of us. The Motion’s horse will be competing against some of the newcomer horses to the event, so we can say that the experience might prevail on this one.

The thing with some horses that they may be nonadaptive as it in comparison to others. The horse just may not be able-able to cope with the terrain and would, therefore, keep getting bad results. The track at Gulfstream can be exceptionally dry, and the horse may not manage to get used to it, unlike some of the spectacular performance others are able to achieve.

Graham Motion Kentucky Derby

The method of handling the situation may be adopted: the horse will most probably get some rest because its condition and shape isn’t as good as it used to be because of the high-level exercises and training that the horse couldn’t cope with. But everybody believes in Graham Motion and his Irish War Cry, a relatively young three-year-old colt that is willing to strive for victory, but the lack of experience on different terrains bother him. Motion felt that people had lost their belief in them, but he had a big surprise in store.

Kentucky Derby 143 Report

As preparation races were held a few weekends ago, so the horses did try to adapt to environment and surface. However, there were some surprises regarding those races; Hence, Fast and Accurate had received 50 points in Spiral and Sunland Derby. Also, amazing results from the Thunder Snow which had won 100 points in a UAE Derby.

In the Sunland derby, Hence did all his best to impress everybody in the auditorium and he succeeded. There were some records on this race, as he registered 103 BRIS Speed rating which is a significant improvement over his previous best 86. However, his competition here wasn’t so good, so the only thing that is impressing in this appearance is the personal best record. Will Hence manage to keep its stamina and good form with other, faster and experienced horses remains a doubt until the big event.

Kentucky Derby 143 Report

The thing with Hence is that he simply must remain strong and strive for first place because on many occasions we have seen some new young 3-year-old horses that had just come to the competition and did amazingly well. Just bear in mind that there will be some of those surprises this year. And we should expect even more for the main event…and all of the Triple Crown.

Pay special attention to the pre-game performance as this could give you some good indication of what is to come. Be up on the newest information as the trainers are indeed anxious to win that coveted trainer’s reward.

However the situation in the lower rank UAE Derby is a bit different. There is one horse named Thunder Snow that had won a race, surprisingly finishing ahead of the unbeaten Japanese horse Epicharis. This is a third win in a row for Thunder Snow and we expect a lot more from him.m
His trainer, Saeed bin Suroor says that his horse is very capable of adaptation to new surroundings and that he believes Thunder Snow will do amazingly well as in this race. Trust is definitely there, but ability is the question? Well, we it’s up to them to present us what are they exactly capable of and will a talented colt like Thunder really manage top cope with the pressure of the seven horse race, will Thunder manage to deal with new bulky terrain and a totally new landscape is open and we’ll soon find out if we have a new rising star…

Practiced over the years, horse racing has always involved sets of horses carrying riders by some method, competing to see who will get to the finish line with their burden first. The earliest documentation of tamed or domesticated horse are reported to originate in the Ukraine from as far back as around 3500 BC but that information is challenged by reports that the now Kazakhstan had people riding horses from around 3000 BC.

The ancient cultures of Egypt, Persia, Greece or Babylon is said to have given horse racing its beginning and, based on historical texts, were depicted as a horse pulling on a chariot with a rider inside. This type of horse racing is still practiced in recent times in some cultures. And, even though horse racing of this nature is known to have resulted in significant personal injury and death this was the one of the strongest selling point of the horse racing of that era.

Horse Racing History

Origins of Flat Racing
“Flat racing” is what comes to mind when most people think about current horse racing. Basically, the horse racing is done on a flat surface or track regardless of the whether that surface is made of synthetic material, dirt or grass. The track is usually oval in shape and the rider sits atop the horse and directs him in getting to the finish line. Wagering online records indicate that the first documented flat race occurred in 1174AD on a four mile track and very soon became a demand at festivals and fairs in Europe and the UK.

Origins of Thoroughbreds
In the 1600’s three stallions from the “Orient” were mated with mares to produce a breed of horses now recognized as thoroughbred horses. These horses were descendants of Arabian, Turkey and Barb horses and the crossbreeding done from about 1680 to 1740 produced thoroughbred horses of such power and stamina that this breed of horses quickly became the most sought after breed. It was not long before breeders and owners in Europe and England started racing their thoroughbred against each other to see whose was faster, better or stronger.

And so the “English Classics” was born.

Is this information you need to know going into the 2017 Kentucky Derby? Probably not, but it’s a good life lesson to learn about when it comes to the world of thoroughbred horse racing.
